My name is May Winfield. I am a leading expert in legal and other risks related to digital and technology, including 3D modelling, blockchain, digital twins and AI, with experience in creating strategy, standard documentation and processes in these areas.
I have been a construction and construction insurance lawyer for about 20 years, with most of that focusing on digital and construction technology.
Distinguished by my practical, commercial, and problem-solving mindset, I am skilled at finding reasonable solutions to risk issues and developing processes that suit the business needs. I think my ability to connect and communicate with legal, commercial, and technical departments sets me apart, as these parts of the business often remain in silos without knowing. I actively participate in the development and implementation of innovative processes, digital technology, and standardized documentation on a global level.
I’m currently the Global Director of Legal and Digital Risk at engineering firm Buro Happold.
At Buro Happold, I lead the risk management processes for digital and technology services and procedures, as well as leading the global legal team. A key part of my role involves engaging with senior stakeholders and bringing together all areas of the business to implement change processes and strategy. I lead several digital transformation programmes, including relating to AI and digital risk.
Organisations And Legislation
I am co-author of standard industry documents related to digital and construction technology, including leading the drafting of the UK Government-approved legal guidance and standard contract documentation for the ISO19650 international standards. I am a member of the Centre of Digital Built Britain’s Digital Twin working group, and the UK Government’s Construction Playbook working group.
Awards
I am honoured to have won a number of awards, including being named one of the 10 Most Inspiring Women Leaders to Follow in 2022 and receiving the UK Leading Expert in Construction Law award at the 2022 Corporate Excellence Awards. My expertise in compliance innovation earnt me the Compliance Innovator award at the Lexology European Counsel Awards 2023.
Speaking Engagements
I am a sought-after speaker at global events, including delivering a talk at a BIM conference in Brazil, the opening keynote at the Construction Blockchain Conference in Hong Kong and presenting at Autodesk University in 2020-2023. My full class at Autodesk 2023 on risks associated with AI was on the highly regarded Theatre Talks stage (being presentations by thought leaders) and I also was a guest on the popular Digital Builder podcast during Autodesk University 2023.
I take a progressive and commercial approach to the business. I have a key role in developing digital strategy and process. My leadership philosophy centres on fostering a strong team, emphasising mentorship and supervision to junior colleagues. Notably, I am recognised for my unique perspective on innovation, particularly in understanding the risks and applying lateral thinking.
